Tight contests bring 2026 Lichfield & District Summer League to a close

Burton had already been crowned as unassailable champions of the 2026 Lichfield & District Summer League, but that didn't stop the players from giving their all in the final round of matches played at Tamworth yesterday.
Lichfield '1' were facing Rugeley, and edged to a 2.5 - 1.5 win thanks to wins from Connor Whetnall on Board 3, Stuart Andrews on Board 4, and a draw from Yuriy Slobodyuk on Board 1. John Fryer was defeated on Board 2.
Meanwhile, Lichfield '2' were held to a 2-2 draw by Norton Canes. Peter Rose and Maurizio Baravalle were the winners for Lichfield on Board 2 and Board 4 respectively, with defeats for Emilie Nastase on Board 1 and Rob Frost on Board 3.
In the other match of the evening, Burton and Tamworth shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw, with Mark Grubb and Graeme Drayton the winners for Burton, and Simon Walton and David Robu winning for Tamworth.
At the end of the evening, Burton were presented with The Winterton Trophy. Congratulations again to them on their impressive victory.
In the final standings, the two Lichfield sides finished level on 6 points, two points clear of Tamworth and Norton Canes:
