Just when we thought that 2020 had been a disaster for chess , up pops a TV series which has created a massive world wide boom in chess sets and on-line players. Hardly a day seems to pass without further news about the upsurge in chess interest caused by “The Queen’s Gambit” , a Netflix…

BDCL still hope to resume season

Birmingham chess leagues officials have still not given up hope of completing the aborted 2019-2020 season. A little more privacy

Lichfield Chess Club has tightened its its procedures to ensure that only the minimum information necessary to run the club is circulated.

Addresses of members are only required by the treasurer to enable him to apply to the English Chess Federation for Bronze or Silver Memberships and so they will no longer appear on the list of members.

These will be circulated at the start of the season and periodically afterwards to carry updates of new members and changes to telephone numbers and email addresses.

The various league websites like to include team telephone numbers of team captains but other than the name of the captain additional information is not mandatory and can be excluded on request.

Protection policy for juniors

Increasingly, councils, schools, churches and others with rooms for hire expect organisations to have a child care policy. The English Chess Federation is currently urging all clubs to comply with its Health and Safety guidelines which are being considered by various Midlands leagues.

Membership of Lichfield Chess Club is open to players of any age and the club has a duty of care not only towards juveniles who come to the club either as members or visitors, but to any disadvantaged adult.

In common with many other sports organisations the club has decided not to select juniors for away matches unless they are accompanied by a parent or an adult nominated by the parents.

As regards club nights, members have been advised that they should avoid being alone with junior members and junior visitors and should remember that words and gestures, however innocently intended, can sometimes be misinterpreted.

With younger juveniles the club insists that they are accompanied by a parent or guardian during club nights. Furthermore, as the Guildhall is open to the public, parents are asked to accompany children as far as the toilet corridor.

Anyone who has concerns regarding any aspect of Health and Safety relating to juveniles or disadvantaged adults are asked to raise the matter with the club’s Safeguarding Officer and secretary, David Short, or in his absence, with club chairman, Peter Collins.

A copy of this notice is given to parents and is shown to all visiting clubs which include juveniles in their team.

Free trial membership for newcomers

The club welcomes players of all ages and abilities from the age of six upwards. Novices receive tuition and as they improve they have opportunities to progress into one or more of the 14 teams which the club operates in four Midlands Leagues – Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Cannock and Derby.

A number of members play for more than one club, Lichfield being unusual in the number of teams and leagues in which it competes and thus providing additional competitive opportunities for players from smaller clubs.

Newcomers can attend free of charge for a month or more before being asked to pay a subscription. There are three grades of membership – full member, social and junior/student.

Full membership of £60 a year applies to members playing league chess, with £16 of the subscription going directly to the English Chess Federation for Bronze level membership. For those wishing to just play friendly matches there is a Social Membership of £25, which is also the cost of Junior and Student membership. All subscriptions include tea, coffee or soft drink.

The club meets at 7:15 p.m. every Thursday from the end of August to the end of April, plus meetings on the last Thursday of May, June and July.
