Resilient Shields helps to kickstart Lichfield's season

After losing their first match of the season, a resilient performance from Stephen Shields helped to navigate Lichfield 'B' to a pleasing 3-1 win over Mercia B at The King's Head, with the four boards finishing in board order.

On board 1, Adam Routledge, standing in as captain, opted with Black to let his opponent take the centre with hopes of attacking it. He was down in development but had a safe structure. He eventually managed to trade off the queens, but his issues weren't over, as a lack of development reared its ugly head. Adam held on to maintain the position's integrity, persevering slowly before generating play on the flanks. He managed to get a rook on the edge and a knight in the centre to dominate the endgame and win.

On board 2, Tony Green with White acquired a comfortable position early on and began to hold and press. His opponent managed to open the position, but his pieces were slightly tied down whereas Tony’s were well spaced out. This comfort was short-lived, as a lingering pin prevented Tony’s advances, forcing him to exhaust many defensive manoeuvres to hold for a draw.

On board 3, Phil Sykes, found himself defending in a cramped position with Black, and his opponent slowly applied pressure and tightened the position. Phil tried to generate queenside play, but his opponent seized the initiative and locked the position down. With neither able to progress, it was agreed drawn.

With Lichfield 2-1 up, Stephen Shields on Board 4 needed only a draw to secure the match, but the game developed with a fairly double-edged position with both sides having good play. He proved faster by wrestling his opponent into a more uncomfortable structure. From here, Stephen chipped away at the kingside and the centre for weaknesses. However, his opponent managed to create a kingside blockade, locking the position down. They swiftly entered a Knight vs Bishop endgame with six pawns each. With his opponent needing to win, he refused a draw offer, only to blunder two pawns. Stephen efficiently converted the imbalance to a win, to give the Lichfield team a 3-1 victory.
