Narrow defeat for Cannock 2A Team

Lichfield 'A' suffered a narrow 1.5 - 2.5 defeat to Rushall in a tense match at The Guildhall. After draws on the other three boards, Board 4 decided the match.

On Board 1, Tony Green, playing Black, battled John Staniforth. Tony recalled many run-ins where John somehow held everything together, and this was no different. Both entered their own systems and slowly pushed for an edge. Tony even gained two pawns, but John somehow held on dearly for a draw.

On Board 2, Albert Chacko as White faced Matthew Blackwell for the third time. Albert managed to initiate a kingside attack and cramped Matt’s position, but ended up in an open position with an uncastled king. Matt managed to trade off and free himself, but Albert initiated a queen trade and created a symmetrical pawn structure to ensure a drawn endgame.

Board 3 also ended in a draw, but a more measured one. Phil Sykes and Steve Wilcox played safe and solid chess, with neither side able to confront the other. Both sides agreed to a draw after signs that further confrontation would not bode well for either.

Board 4 was the decider, with Mike Hoare with the White pieces battling Shane Cooksey. Mike got a strong position and looked to attack. He overpressed and underestimated his initiative, leading to poorly timed sacrifices that Shane could defend. When the dust had settled, Mike was two pieces down with no counterplay, prompting resignation.

The skill levels of both teams were relatively even, but Rushall displayed more grit and deservedly won the match. Hopefully, the 'A' team can bounce back in their next fixture. (Match played: 24th September)
