Lichfield 'B' hold their nerve to defeat Rugeley
Cannock & District League Division 2
Lichfield 'B' are two points clear at the top of the Division 2 table after they negotiated some tricky moments to beat bottom side Rugeley by 3-1 at Lea Hall Social Club.
David Hulme (Black) on Board 2, finished first but fell behind in a complex opening, leaving him in a poor position. He held this position and thwarted all his opponents' attacks. David’s defence was so resilient that his opponent offered an unexpected draw deep in the middlegame. David happily accepted.
Adam Routledge (White) on Board 1, then faced the opposite predicament. He gained a winning position out of the opening and won a piece clean. But his lack of development became an issue as his opponent initiated threats he could not handle. Adam lost his material advantage and allowed multiple trades, resulting in a draw.
Rob Frost (Black) on Board 4, was next to finish, reaching a winning position from the opening. His superior central control and his opponent's restricted formation gave Rob the indication to attack. Rob advanced pawns on the queenside and opened his bishop, but it proved a poor plan. His opponent used this chance to initiate trades, gain space, and even begin exerting pressure of their own. Rob faced real threats to his king and back rank; thankfully, his opponent missed the latter. Rob capitalised on this blunder and went up a rook in the endgame. Rob had a minute left to his opponent’s hour, but with comfortable play, his opponent resigned when checkmate was imminent.
Peter Rose (White) on Board 3, finished last. He misplayed the opening and allowed himself into a closed position with a bishop vs knight. His opponent overextended their queenside pawns and had double g pawns, which gave Peter targets. Peter traded off the minor pieces with a pawn breakthrough, creating a narrow path through the centre. This allowed Peter to prod for more weaknesses until his opponent’s backwards queenside pawn eventually fell. Peter ended up with connected passers after the heavy pieces were traded. This let him slowly manoeuvre and pick off pawns with his king while his opponent was stuck blocking the connected passers.
There was real worry that Lichfield B would lose this match as the top two boards drew, Rob was low on time, and Peter could not eke out much of an advantage. After Rob’s win, Peter had less pressure and played on to eventually win, bringing the score to 3-1 to Lichfield 'B'.
