Lichfield A top table after second match win in Cannock Division 3

Lichfield 'A' followed up a victory over Lichfield 'B' in their first fixture of the season with a second 3-1 win, away at Rushall.

On Board 4, skipper Connor Whetnall, with Black, made a simple pawn push on the edge of the board to shut down his opponent's main threat early on. He then steered the game into waters he knew and controlled the position. Using an intermezzo in a pivotal exchange, he caught his opponent off guard and emerged up a knight to win the game.

Board 3 saw John Fryer, with White, trapping his opponent's bishop early on. He steadily allowed a game of attrition to work in his favour, made fewer mistakes than his opponent, and sealed a winning position.

On Board 2, Richard Ayres as Black forced exchanges and pushed his queenside pawns to gain a potential second queen. His opponent banked on the possibility of perpetual checks or even mate threats if Richard misplayed the position, but Richard steeled himself and staved off the desperados to promote for a new Queen. White resigned immediately. It's not yet clear where Richard's provisional grade will settle, but he has already become a valuable member of several Lichfield teams.

Board 1 saw Andrei Pinzaru, also with a provisional grade, suffer the first loss of his league chess career. He seemed to have a comfortable position and control of the game, but as is often the case in chess, that control wasn't guaranteed, and soon slipped away. His game collapsed through a series of mistakes, his position became untenable, and he resigned.

Lichfield A now sit at the top of the nascent Division 3 table after their excellent start to the season, but with many future challenges to come.
