Defaulted boards, blunders and intermezzo moves: Lichfield 'B' lose to Walsall Kipping

Cannock & District League Division 3

A defaulted board meant Lichfield 'B' got off to the worst possible start in their Cannock Division 3 match against Walsall Kipping. They were unable to recover, losing 3.5 - 0.5.

Having already defaulted on Board 1, Lichfield were quickly 2-0 down when Isaac Adams, playing Black, blundered early on in his game on Board 4.

On Board 3, Maurizio Baravalle, with the White pieces, fell victim to a classic 'intermezzo' (intermediate) check in the middle of a sequence of exchanges, and lost a Bishop. He was forced to resign a few moves later.

With the match beyond hope, captain Ben Adams, Black on Board 2, accepted a draw in a closed position in which neither he nor his opponent felt inclined to push for more.
