Closely fought match ends in defeat for Birmingham Division 2 team

Birmingham & District Division 2

Following a promising drawn match in their first fixture of the season, a tight contest at the Guildhall saw Lichfield's newly-promoted Birmingham Division 2 team lose 4-2 against an evenly-matched Shirley & Wythall side.

John Staniforth, playing Black on Board 2, was under early pressure, with his opponent launching a kingside attack which eventually broke through John's defences. Francis Fields, White on Board 5, had to cope with doubled, isolated pawns from quite early in his game. Eventually the pressure on the board and on the clock was too much.

The other four games were all closely fought. Gary Monks, on Board 6, found himself in a totally blocked position with Black, and agreed a draw. David Hulme, playing White on Board 3, had all the play but could not find a way through; another draw was agreed.

Yuriy Slobodyuk, on Board 4, was under a lot of pressure through the early part of his game, but he managed to break out, creating a strong passed pawn in the process. His opponent's counterplay was, however, enough for the draw. Finally, Tony Green was a pawn up following his opponent's gambit opening, but with his opponent holding an initiative for the gambitted pawn. Working hard to keep his pawn advantage, Tony became desperately short of time, and agreed to a draw.

The match was a clear illustration of just how tough it will be for this team, promoted last season, to try to find a foothold in Division 2. In their next match they face the students of The University of Birmingham. (Match played: 8 October 2026)
