Newcomers can attend free of charge for a month or more before being asked to pay a subscription. There are three grades of membership – full member, social and junior/student.
Full membership of £60 a year applies to members playing league chess, with £16 of the subscription going directly to the English Chess Federation for Bronze level membership. For those wishing to just play friendly matches there is a Social Membership of £25, which is also the cost of Junior and Student membership. All subscriptions include tea, coffee or soft drink.
Social members and juniors are also entitled to play in the three club tournaments, a Quickplay event which traditionally starts the new season, a Lightning 10 second per move tournament which ends it and a Ladder Tournament for which members winning league matches score a point for each win during the season.
Juniors playing for one of the club teams pay an additional subscription of £11 which goes to the ECF for Bronze membership.
Subscriptions become payable following the annual general meeting at the beginning of May and cover the three summer club nights held on the last Thursday of May, June and July, and the following club season which starts on the last Thursday in August each year and continues every Thursday apart from a two week break at Christmas.
